Short answer: zoomies are normal. Your job is a safe space, not stopping them.

What they are

Cornell calls them frenetic random activity periods, or FRAPs: a dog tucks the bottom and runs wild laps around the house or yard. There is no known specific cause. They seem to be a way to release pent-up energy, or maybe to ease stress. They are most common in puppies and young dogs, but many dogs get them for life. They often happen after a bath, at certain times of day, or when a dog has been home alone with nothing to do. For more on this, see Why Is My Dog More Wired After Fetch.

Keep it safe

Cornell says zoomies themselves do not hurt a dog, but a dog running flat out can slip or crash. Keep the dog away from stairs, slippery floors, obstacles, and the road. Grass is the best footing. Carpet and packed dirt are okay. Hard floors, ice, gravel, and sand raise the risk of a fall. Keep your dog in an enclosed space when off leash. Put away fragile things.

If it happens a lot

Cornell says frequent zoomies, or ones at awkward times, may mean your dog needs more activity and mental stimulation. Think about adding sniffing, food puzzles, and calm decompression before bed, not only more running.

Get the right help

If your dog looks in pain, frightened, or anxious while zooming, ask your vet to check.
