City walks

First walks in Greensboro.

In Greensboro, the rule comes straight from Guilford County: a dog stays under physical restraint - leash, bridle, cage or similar - anywhere in the city, with official dog parks for off-leash play. The rules, the parks, and a calm plan for a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Greensboro and Guilford County codes, Guilford County Animal Control, and the city’s parks pages.

  • 1Out in public: physical restraint - a leash, bridle, cage or similar device (fine print)
  • 2Off-leash play: Country Park and downtown LeBauer Park
  • 3Rabies: keep the tag on the collar and save the certificate
  • 4Rabies shot from four months - county rule
  • 5Letting a dog defecate on someone else’s property is a declared nuisance
  • 6Fines start at $100 and can reach $500 per incident per animal
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

Greensboro’s rule: the city adopts Guilford County’s animal ordinance wholesale (§5-2), and under it a dog anywhere in the city must be "under sufficient physical restraint such as a leash, bridle, cage or similar device which restrains and controls the animal," inside a vehicle, or adequately contained by a fence or secure enclosure - an invisible fence counts at home if a permanent sign says it is in use (§5-3(a)(1)). The code sets no leash-length cap. The county-level exceptions - an acre-plus lot, or voice-controlled hunting and working dogs - apply only outside city limits, so in Greensboro the restraint rule is the rule, and the city designates its dog parks for off-leash play. Guilford County Animal Control enforces inside the city; its own page says the most common fine starts at $100 for a first offense and can reach $500 per incident per animal.
