City walks

First walks in Boston.

In Boston, your dog stays on a leash of 10 feet or less any time it is on a street or public place - eight feet or less inside city parks. Off-leash play is for the seven designated dog recreation spaces, plus a rotating lawn on Boston Common. The city’s own rules and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Boston City Code and the city’s own pages.

  • 1On any street or public place: leash of 10 feet or less
  • 2In city parks: eight feet at most
  • 3Off-leash play: seven designated dog recreation spaces
  • 4Annual license from six months - rabies shot first
  • 5Pick up everywhere - and carry the bag in public

Hours, exceptions & the fine print

A dog may not go onto any street or public place unless it is "effectively restrained by a chain or leash not exceeding 10 feet in length," and it may not enter someone else’s property without permission (16-1.9). City parks tighten the cap: park rules allow leashes up to eight feet, with off-leash play only in the designated Dog Recreation Spaces, and dogs stay out of tot lots, play areas, sandboxes, ball fields and other fenced children’s areas. Fines step up per calendar year: a warning, then $50, $60 and $100 for repeat offenses (16-1.9A).
