City walks

First walks in Detroit.

In Detroit, any park, public place or boulevard means a leash of six feet or less, strong enough to hold your dog in constant check - with off-leash play only in the city’s designated dog park areas. The city’s own rules and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Detroit City Code and the city’s own pages.

  • 1Parks, public places, boulevards: leash of six feet at most
  • 2Off-leash play: the city’s designated dog park areas
  • 3License from four months - rabies shot always current
  • 4Pick up immediately - removal is what counts
  • 5Tag on the collar whenever your dog is out
  • 6No tying out on a leash over six feet
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

Detroit’s parks code says no dog is allowed "within the confines of any park, public place or boulevard" unless it is "attached to a leash, which does not exceed six feet in length and is of sufficient strength to hold such animal in constant check" - the only exception written into the rule is a location the Recreation Department designates as a dog park area (33-1-25). Tying a dog to a tree, shrub or structure on a leash over six feet is forbidden too. The animal code backs the rule up: a dog loose on public property can be impounded (6-1-9), and owners must keep their dogs from nuisance behavior (6-1-3). Breaking the animal code is a misdemeanor - up to $500, up to 90 days, or both (6-1-3(f)).
