City walks

First walks in Aurora.

In Aurora, your dog stays on a leash, cord or chain no longer than ten feet whenever it is off your property - the exceptions are your own enclosed vehicle and the city’s dedicated off-leash dog parks - with three city-listed off-leash spots. The city’s own rules and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Aurora Municipal Code and the city’s park listing.

  • 1Off your property: a leash, cord or chain no longer than 10 feet, held by someone who can physically control the dog - except your own enclosed vehicle, and the city’s dedicated off-leash dog parks (fine print)
  • 2Off-leash play: three listed spots - Grandview Dog Park, Bicentennial Park, Singletree Park
  • 3Rabies vaccination is due before six months; the city license is required once the dog is over six months - tag on the collar
  • 4Spayed or neutered by six months, unless you hold an annual intact license (fine print)
  • 5Scoop immediately, on public property and anyone else’s - never into storm drains
  • 6In the parks: leashed and under control on trails and in parks, except at a dog park; no dogs in the ball-field complexes
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

Aurora makes it unlawful to let a dog run at large anywhere in the city, and off your premises the dog must be “restrained by a leash, cord or chain a maximum of 10 feet in length, held by a person who is physically able to control the animal” (14-5) - a real ten-foot cap, written into the code. The written exceptions: a dog on its owner’s premises is not at large, a dog enclosed in its owner’s vehicle counts as on the premises, and a dog inside a city dedicated off-leash dog park is not at large (14-5(a)(3)-(5)). The code carries no service- or police-dog leash exception. At home, a tether must be at least six feet and cannot let the dog reach public property or a neighbor’s (14-5(a)(1)). Penalties run under the city’s general penalty section, and a second at-large conviction also means spay or neuter plus a microchip (14-5(c)). The scoop law requires immediate removal of excrement from streets, sidewalks, play areas, parks, any other public property and private property - and never into storm sewers or gutters (14-9).
