City walks

First walks in Denver.

For walks away from home, Denver asks for a leash, cord or chain held by you - the city’s 17 listed dog parks are the place for off-leash play, under an adult’s supervision. The city’s own rules and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Denver Revised Municipal Code and the city’s own pages.

  • 1A leash, cord or chain, held by you, anywhere off your property
  • 2Off-leash play: the designated dog parks, supervised by someone 18 or older
  • 3Dog license from six months - tag worn whenever off your property
  • 4Rabies vaccination from six months, tag on the collar
  • 5Spay or neuter required from six months
  • 6Pick up immediately - $150 penalty if you don’t
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

The city sets civil penalties: $80 for a dog at large (8-16), $75 for no license (8-46), $100 for a missing rabies shot (8-31), $150 for not picking up (8-73) and $250 for skipping spay/neuter (8-55, 8-56). Denver’s definition is unusually specific: the leash must be held by the owner or keeper - in the code’s own words, a dragging lead does not count. The definition also counts a dog on its own property when it is confined in a way that still lets it reach the public right-of-way (8-2(22)) - a gap at the fence line matters.
