The rules, in short

From the Port St. Lucie Code of Ordinances and the city’s own pages.

  • 1City parks: a leash no longer than six feet in common areas; voice command alone is not restraint
  • 2Off-leash play: five city dog parks, each with separate fenced areas
  • 3Keep rabies vaccination and city licensing current; age and medical exceptions are in the fine print
  • 4Check the current license period and fee; qualifying microchipped pets can use a lifetime license
  • 5Pick up promptly on public or other people's property; owner consent is an affirmative defense
  • 6At every city park: leashed dogs welcome in the common areas only - never on fields, courts or playgrounds
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

Section 92.03 prohibits animals running at large and requires proper restraint outside the home. Section 92.01 includes a leash no longer than six feet controlled by a competent person, a tether, a vehicle subject to section 92.21, or an enclosed area or other security within the owner's or keeper's property. Voice command alone does not count. Electronic fences qualify only with a working system and collar, within the property, and at least five feet from a sidewalk, roadway or property line; sidewalks and swales are outside those limits. Tethering has separate care conditions in section 92.14(g), not the same six-foot walking-leash rule. Use designated dog parks for off-leash play and obey the entrance rules.
