City walks

First walks in Irvine.

In Irvine, a dog out in public walks on a substantial leash of six feet or less - and off-leash time belongs to Central Bark, the city’s three-acre dog park. The city’s own rules and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Irvine Municipal Code, the city’s licensing page and Central Bark’s posted rules.

  • 1Out in public: a substantial leash, six feet or less, a competent person holding it (fine print)
  • 2Off-leash play: Central Bark - leashed going in and out
  • 3Licensed and tagged by four months - register within 30 days of the dog arriving
  • 4Rabies shot by four months; the license never outlasts it
  • 5Scoop every time - the city calls it a nuisance and the park calls it the law
  • 6Violations can be charged as a misdemeanor or an infraction (fine print)
Exceptions & the fine print

Irvine’s rule covers streets, sidewalks, trails, open space and any other public place, and others’ property without written consent: a dog must be "restrained by a substantial leash, not to exceed six feet in length, and in the charge of a person competent to restrain such dog" (§4-5-701). The written exceptions are approved dog parks and working, hunting, obedience and show dogs while on duty (§§4-5-701, 4-5-707). At home or on property where the owner says yes, a dog may be loose (§4-5-705). Violations are misdemeanors unless charged as infractions (§4-13-201).
