City walks

First walks in Charlotte.

Charlotte’s rule: your dog stays under control everywhere - restrained, in a vehicle, or inside a secure enclosure - and on a leash in public parks outside the designated off-leash areas. The city’s own rules, the county’s seven dog parks in Charlotte, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Charlotte Code and the county Park & Recreation pages.

  • 1Under physical restraint at all times, on or off your property
  • 2Leashed at all times in public parks (off-leash areas excepted)
  • 3Off-leash only in designated off-leash areas
  • 4City license and rabies tag from four months
  • 5Pick up after your dog
  • 6No leash-length limit - the handler must be able to control the dog
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

The restraint rule (3-71) requires enough physical restraint to control the dog anywhere, and a leash handler old and able enough to hold it. In parks the rule is explicit: leashed at all times except in designated off-leash areas (3-71(d)). The county’s dog parks are open daily 7:30 a.m. to sunset; dogs must be current on rabies (with tag number), DHLPP and Bordetella vaccinations, and children under 12 are not allowed in the dog parks.
