City walks

First walks in Atlanta.

In Atlanta, your dog stays on a leash in city parks, and anywhere public on the Fulton County side - six feet at most there. On the DeKalb County side, under control also counts a dog at heel and obedient. The city’s own rules, the eight official dog parks, and how we suggest starting a new dog’s first week.

The rules, in short

From the Atlanta Code of Ordinances and the city’s Leash Up ATL page.

  • 1In city parks: a leash, unless the area is a designated dog park
  • 2Fulton side: a leash of six feet or less, with a competent handler
  • 3DeKalb side: under control - a leash, or at heel and obedient
  • 4Pick up immediately - sealed into a bag or container
  • 5License over four months - tag on the collar when the dog is out
  • 6Off-leash play: the city’s eight official dog parks
Hours, exceptions & the fine print

Atlanta straddles two counties, and the leash rule depends on which side you are on. In the Fulton County part of the city - most of Atlanta - a dog off its own premises must be “securely under leash; said leash being not more than six feet long, and under the control of a competent person” (18-124; obedience trials, dog shows, tracking, law-enforcement work and licensed hunting in agricultural zones are the exceptions). In the DeKalb County part, a dog must be under control: on a leash, at heel, or beside a competent person and obedient to their commands (18-62, 18-63) - no length cap there. In every city park, trail and public space the rule is simply a leash, unless the area is a designated off-leash dog park, and Atlanta Police cite for off-leash dogs (110-70 and the city’s Leash Up ATL page). Tethering a dog is unlawful except a temporary tether while the dog is attended, on a properly fitted collar or harness (18-124). A violation of the code can bring a fine of up to $1,000, up to six months, or both, each day a separate offense (1-8); repeat public-nuisance-animal convictions start at $250 (18-116).
