Short answer: ask your vet when your puppy will be protected by vaccinations. Until then, avoid places used by unvaccinated dogs, but do not wait to start socializing in safe ways.
Why the timing matters
PDSA says puppies have a socialization period between 4 and 12 weeks, when their brains learn what is normal. Puppies who miss it tend to be more anxious later. At the same time, diseases covered by vaccines can be fatal for puppies, so your puppy should not go certain places or mix with unvaccinated dogs until fully covered. For more on this, see Puppy Socialization Without Flooding.
What you can do now
PDSA suggests socializing in your yard, as long as unvaccinated dogs do not use it. You can carry your puppy so they can see and hear new things, and meet new people, in calm places. Keep each experience short and positive, and take your puppy away if it gets too much.
Meeting dogs
Puppies should meet only fully vaccinated dogs until they have completed their own course. A puppy class can be a safe option. Ask your vet whether the practice runs one, and check which vaccines your puppy needs before the first class.
Get used to the gear
Let your puppy wear a collar or harness around the house for a few hours so they are ready for the first walk as soon as the vaccines are complete.
Get the right help
Your vet knows your local vaccine schedule and disease risks. Ask them for the date. If your puppy seems frightened of new things, ask a qualified reward-based trainer for help.
Does one of these sound like yours?
